Den Atem anhalten is an ongoing drawing series that I have continued every day since January 1, 2021.The work follows a simple rule: I draw only while holding my breath, and the moment I exhale, I lift the pen from the paper. Each drawing is completed within a single breath.Breathing is not only a biological function essential for sustaining life, but also an act that alters physical tension, concentration, the perception of time, and states of consciousness. In this series, the condition of my body while holding my breath is recorded directly as a single line. No two lines are ever the same.I am interested in the ideas of “normality” and “self-control” that contemporary society expects of the individual. Through the bodily condition produced by holding my breath—a state that cannot be entirely controlled—I reflect on the relationship between the human body and society. Den Atem anhalten forms the core of my artistic practice through the daily act of observing my body and accepting its continual transformation. This series will continue for as long as I am alive. As I grow older, my body will inevitably change, and one day I may no longer be able to hold my breath for more than a minute. This work embraces that process, accumulating over time together with the changes of my body. Each line is a record of a single day—a trace that continues to examine the body, time, and life itself through the ordinary yet fundamental act of breathing.
