Since around 2026, I have been recording my sleep talking every night and arranging these recordings within an exhibition space.
The words that can be heard consist of fragmented and unstable expressions: screams, interrupted phrases, repetitions, silences, and other incomplete utterances. The subtitles projected onto the wall are English translations of the words I spoke during sleep.
I consider sleep talking to be speech that exists outside the control of the conscious self. It is also an intensely personal bodily trace produced somewhere between body and mind, reality and dreams, consciousness and the unconscious. I am deeply drawn to those moments in which the body seems to leak language as a way of revealing what is occurring unconsciously.
The title, “Your Sense Is Out of Sync,” is an actual phrase I uttered in my sleep. Through the defenseless and involuntary voice of sleep talking, this work attempts to engage with the feeling that we are never able to fully control ourselves.
In addition to the video work, I will also present a live performance. In this performance, I memorize the English translations of my own sleep talking and vocalize them myself in the exhibition space.By consciously repeating words that were originally spoken unconsciously, the language—once uncontrolled—begins to acquire a different meaning and physicality. Through this process, a strange sensation emerges: although the words are mine, they no longer feel entirely like my own. This act is also an attempt to bring traces of the unconscious back into the body once again. By re-performing fragmented words that leaked out during sleep through a conscious and awakened body, I seek to make visible the dissonance and movement between consciousness and the unconscious, between the self and the body.
